Statistics from the Department of Labor show:
12.3 million adults currently use illicit drugs.
9.4 million (77%) are employed.
Alcohol is the most widely abused drug among working adults. An estimated 6.2 % of adults working full time are heavy drinkers.
More than 60 % of adults know someone who has reported for work under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
Among the population of full-time employed current illicit drug users:
44 % work for small establishments (1-24 employees)
43 % work for medium establishments (25-499 employees)
13 % work for large establishments (500 or more employees)
How Does Substance Abuse Affect Your Workplace?
Studies show that substance abusers are:
Five times more likely to file a workers' compensation claim.
Two and a half times more likely to have absences of 8 days or more. They average ten times as many days missed as non-users.
3.6 times more likely to injure themselves or others in workplace accidents.
Five times more likely to be injured in an accident off the job.
Substance Abusers:
Are one third less productive.
Request time off 2.2 times more often.
Come in late three times more often than others.
Cause a negative impact on heath care costs.
